Who Is Likely To Get Dry Eye Syndrome After LASIK Surgery Discovered By Scientists

Scientists at Schepens Eye Research Institute have found that people with a certain low level of tear production are more likely to develop chronic dry eye syndrome after LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), laser refractive surgery to correct near- and far-sightedness than those with more plentiful tears. Their research, published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science, may offer reliable prescreening criteria for ophthalmologists and patients.

"These findings should help ophthalmologists determine if pretreatment is necessary before surgery or if surgery is appropriate at all for an individual," says Dr. Darlene Dartt, director of the Military Vision Research Program at Schepens Eye Research Institute and the principal investigator of the study.

Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common problems treated by eye physicians.

In brief

Patients who undergo vision-correcting laser eye surgery sign a release form with an extensive list of risks, but some researchers and former patients say a potential complication is not mentioned: depression that can lead to suicide.

In response to patient complaints, the Food and Drug Administration plans to convene a large, national study to examine the relationship of LASIK complications and quality of life, including psychological problems such as depression.

Malvina Eydelman, an ophthalmologist with the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, wrote in an e-mail that the scant clinical data available "failed to suggest significant problems following LASIK surgery."

Mystery Surrounds Closure Of Lomas Surgery Center

A mystery in Renton affects eye patients throughout Western Washington.

The popular high-profile Lomas Lasik and Eye Care Center has closed with no notice.

It's not easy for Betty Bailey to get around, so she was irritated to learn her trip to Renton was wasted.

"We've driven a hundred miles for an appointment we thought we had at 3:30," she said.

Bailey was met with a sign on the door. The Lomas clinic was closed.

"It's just a scam now. It's a scam," she said.

We don't know if it's a scam, but it is a mystery. The clinic closed, patients turned away with no notice.

"Oh my God, he just had his surgery from there," said Ho Yun.

"I'm having problems, so I came back," said Eric Yun.
